Portable Music Player known as PMP devices, which is simply a short terminology, is a layman's term used to describe any compact digital portable music player that allows you the ease to download from the Internet and quickly save desired digital music files (in play back MP3 format) from your computer and then easily play on a PMP device. In the beginning this had some legalities that had to be considered by the states.

The category of PMP devices have all but replaced what was known as the larger Walkmans and other portable CD players known and used back a few years ago. Not only due to their much smaller size but because you can store hundreds and even thousands of songs on them.
Today Portable Music Player devices come in all shapes, styles and sizes as well as colors. As if we didn't have enough terminology in this category of devices already, here is another acronym for you to take into consideration. Some PMP devices, like MP3 players, are also called DAP which is short name for digital audio player.
Now you ar4e probably asking, What is an MP3 Player?

An MP3 player is a type of digital audio player and falls under the broader category of PMP devices. It's a small (often weighing less than an ounce) hand held device that use flash memory for storing MP3 files.
In addition to supporting the MP3 format, depending on the brand of player you buy, it might also support additional file types such as Windows Media Audio (WMA), Waveform Audio (WAV), Music Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI), Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), Ogg Vorbis and other audio formats.
An MP3 player is simply a unique storage device that contains the latest solid-state memory, like the new flash memory, and compatible software that will let you transfer audio files back and forth from your computer to the carry along hand held players. MP3 players may have built features such as play lists, radio or Web site streaming, and other basic options like being able to choose a desired back light color, and equalization options. MP3 players most commonly use the the high quality USB ports found on all computers today for quality data transfer. Some may even plug into the Fire Wire socket or one of the parallel ports. After you transfer the music files to the player they are then stored in the player's memory for future use. Most all of the MP3 players are battery-powered and may also come with an AC Adapter for longer playing and charging.
In this fast changing world there are also a host of other consumer music devices which have an embedded MP3 player already installed.Those devices can be found in satellite radios, smart phones, PDAs, sunglasses, and even Dick Tracy wrist MP3 watches.
How Is It Different From an iPod?
When considering the array of devices what's the difference between an iPod and its competitor MP3 player? Both of them are considered MP3 players, but the highly sought after iPod is a cherished brand of MP3 player, produced by the well known Apple Corp that has a targeted set of features and design. Since the well received release of the Apple iPod back in 2001, marketed under the iPod brand name. Apple has since released many other variations of its quality product such as the;
1) iPod classic,
2) iPod Touch,
3) iPod Shuffle,
4) iPod Mini,
5) iPod Nano
6) iPod Photo.

Unlike most mass market and cheaper MP3 players, the iPods uses its own classic Apple iTunes software to transfer downloaded music to the music devices. When using iTunes you can easily

*transfer photos,

Play videos, game and small applications (when supported by the player) and many other features.
One main issue that should be of concern for those who use any of these devices is that PMPs volume can reach 116db and it has been shown that 85 db can bring permanent hearing damage. The volume and the damage may not always be detected quickly enough to prevent the damage and so young people and those that are aware of the issue need to alert others that the volume should be kept at a reasonable and safe adjustments. After all. Once the hearing is gone so is the joy of the music.
